What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a way of paying wise attention to the present moment. 

Paying attention to the present moment is something we do, at least occasionally every day.  The kind of attention most of us customarily pay is often attention via tunnel vision.

Mindfulness is paying attention differently – changing how we pay attention.  Through mindfulness we can experience a moment for all that it is, instead of letting our thoughts drag us somewhere we hadn't intended going in the first place.  Being mindful means we suspend judgment for a time, taking in the present moment with openness - as best we can. 

Reducing our preoccupation with worries, memories, fantasies, past or future planning, can have a beneficial effect on our life, health and general well-being.

How many times have you arrived at the bus stop, completely unaware of how you got there, or gone into another room to fetch something only to find yourself at a loss?  Have you ever been in the shower in the morning, but the mind is already at work, pondering over the day ahead?


Mindfulness is:

  •  being aware of whatever is happening at the present moment, without judgment   
  • “coming back to our senses”, being in touch with ourselves, our surroundings and others in the present moment

  • paying attention to the present moment as is happens to be, not the way we would like it to be

  • being intentional, experiential and non-judgmental

During our classes you will learn and practice various techniques to help cultivate awareness, such as meditation, movement, breathing, listening, seeing, and just being.  The programs are individually designed to offer support and practical ways to improve the quality of each moment, ways that may help with the understanding and reduction of stress and is effective in reducing anxiety, panic, depression, insomnia, living with chronic pain, IBS, PTSD, psoriasis, and enhancing the quality of life of patients with chronic illnesses.


Try this:

Sitting where you are at this moment, pause for a few seconds and be aware of how you are sitting, and how you are breathing.  Notice the sensation where your body meets the chair.  Have you noticed this before?  The way the breath is at this moment, or the sounds around you?  Take a few more seconds to just be with what is at this moment before continuing to explore this site.
